The Alternative Guide to the Places of Northern Ireland

The aim here is to give information on the well-known and the not so well-known places to go in NI.  Most people have heard of the Giants Causeway, but how many of your know about the vanishing lake at Cushendall or the Copeland Islands off the shore at Donaghadee?  We'll review them all from an insider's point of view.

We've reviewed and keep reviewing the latest places to go out in Belfast.  This was inspired by the fact that most travel guides to Northern Ireland point tourists to the most generic kind of nightclub but not everyone wants that. Our going out guide will cover all types of places from metal clubs, to jazz nights, alternative, indie, techno clubs to the generic nightclub as well as other activities is pubs and clubs are not your thing.  Once this list gets going we'll try and update it as regularly as possible as there's always emerging nights out and by the time somewhere has been declared the latest place to hang out everyone has moved on.

Eating out is a big thing in Northern Ireland and once again the travel guides go for the generic places to eat.  We'll try and keep you up-to-date with all the latest food stuff from NI, from where to get that hangover cure Ulster Fry to where to date the other half for something a little special.

If this is not enough why not check out our alternative guide to Northern Ireland.  This is aimed at people who live, work and play in northern and is done with our tongue firmly in cheek though we hope it will help some people.  The idea is to provide information on everyday things which would be rather bizarre appearing in a tourist guide though it may be useful in discovering the real Northern Ireland or if you are road tripping.  The idea came many years ago when I just passed my driving test, and was still being turned away from bars for being underage so I had to spend my time somehow.  I ended up spending it driving round the country (mostly Antrim and Down) with my friends; we'd get food, hang out in carparks, even bring a tent and camp out in random places.  From this we found some real gem places to go and things to do that don't fit in with a normal guide.  In recognition of all the fun times and the strange places visited at 2am I thought a guide was in order.  The alternative guides will detail the best petrol stations, best ice-cream places, best car-parks, best public toilets and things you can do for free in Northern Ireland.
